Green Show

Two children meet on their way to the bins, one carrying a bag of empty bottles, the other with a bag of clothes, and after a short discussion they decide to recycle the bottles and clothes, rather than throwing them out for landfill (1. Don’t Tip It in the Bin). They go off to the park, but when they find it in a mess, they persuade their friends to put their litter in the trash can, rather than dropping it on the ground (2. A Little Bit O’ Litter). The cars on the road next to the park are spewing out exhaust so the children pick up their bicycles and show the car drivers the joys of cycling (3. I’ve Got My Car). Cyclists, walkers and kayakers demonstrate the ‘green machine’ way of enjoying the countryside (4. Green Machines). As they paddle upstream, the kayakers are upset to see dying fish and they also find an otter who is feeling ill. They take the otter to the vet and discover the pollution is coming from a factory. They get the help of a local councillor to stop this. The fish come back in greater numbers and the otter is happy again (5. Ozzie Otter and his Sparkling Fish). The children notice black smoke coming out of the factory chimney and realise they still have work to do. Some friends come along with a hot air balloon and they all climb in and go up to test what is happening to the air we breathe (6. Mind What You’re Sending Up Your Chimney). Once in the air, they get blown south over to Africa where they see giraffe (7. Giraffe), rhino (8. Rhino Run ), and a herd of elephant (9. My Elephant Skin). They are blown east over India, where they land and persuade the hunters to hunt with cameras instead of guns (10. Let the Tiger Live!). Their journey takes them to China where they see panda (11. Blues for a Bear) and then down south to Australia where they are entertained by the antics of the kangaroos (12. The Kangaroo Hop). Their journey continues over Antarctica, where the penguins plead with them to be left in their environment in peace (13. Antarctica - the Penguins’ Plea). They finally reach South America, crocodile territory, (14. Crocodile Rag) and they are shocked at the devastation of the rainforest (15. Chopping Down Trees). After their round-the-world adventure, the balloon finally brings them home. They have seen for themselves that there is only one world for us to share, and we need to look after it (16. Another Day, Another Way). They exhort the audience to be pro-active in saving the world (17. Save Our World).

Zoom

This musical tells the story of a group of children who want to find answers to the problems of our world. As they haven’t found the answers on Earth, they wonder if there are any answers ‘out there’ and they build a spaceship (1. Building the Spaceship). They fly off out into space. Their rocket develops mechanical difficulties and they have to make an unplanned landing on a planet (2. Step Into Our Spaceship). They realise they have left the tool box at home, and they need a hammer and some wires. They meet the Wood aliens (3.Wood Is Good). These aliens only use wood and they make it clear that they are enemies with the other inhabitants of the planet, the Metal and Plastic aliens. The space travellers get a piece of wood for the hammer handle, and go to meet the Metal aliens, who boast of the properties of metals, especially gold (4. Metal). The space travellers get some metal for the hammer head and for wires, and then go off to hunt the Plastic aliens in the hope of finding some flexible insulation. The Plastic aliens praise plastic (5. Plastic Is Fantastic), but when the children explain what is possible by combining different materials, they make overtures to the Wood and Metal aliens, and all three groups decide to make friends and collaborate with each other (6. I'll Be Your Friend). The children fix the rocket with the hammer and the wires, and fly off again. They land on another planet, where everyone is watching TV (7. Telly Watchers). The space travellers encourage the TV watchers to take up some new hobbies and enjoy life more (8. Give It A Go). Being away from home is upsetting some of the travellers and they sing about missing family and friends (9. Homesick). Suddenly the Blue people bounce in, and proceed to sing and dance the blues away (10. Chasing the Blues Away). Energised, the children move on, but they are lost and need a map. They land on another planet, the Mathematical planet (11. Mathematical Aliens). The Maths aliens introduce the pride of their planet, the Square Number Train (12. The Square Number Train). They provide the travellers with a map, and the children take off and return home (13. Reprise: Step Into Our Spaceship). Once back home, the children decide that humans already have the answers to human problems, and we need to do the best we can (14. Follow Your Star). They conclude that working together and making friends will help the world be a better place (15. Zoom).

Nativity

The cast walk in slowly to the opening song (1. The Baby Born in Bethlehem). The Nazarenes set to work, the men chopping and hauling wood, the women cooking and cleaning, and the shepherds guarding their sheep. There is tension based on how hard they all work, but the issue is settled by the peacemakers in the last verse (2. Whistle a Tune As You Go Along). Roman soldiers arrive and announce the census, and the Nazarenes are annoyed by this unwanted intrusion into their peaceful lives. They grumpily pack a few things for the long journey ahead (3. Up to Bethlehem We'll Go, Go, Go!). They start walking, full of energy at first, but they soon tire and become somewhat dispirited at the length of the journey ahead, and they settle down to rest for the night (4. It's a Long Way to Bethlehem). In Bethlehem everyone is rushing around, sometimes pushing each other out of the way, preparing for the influx of visitors (5. Bethlehem is Whirling Tonight!). The donkey, meanwhile, watches all of this activity and wishes people would spend more time looking after each other (6. The Donkey's Lament). The Nazarenes arrive and gradually fill up all the inns until they are all really squashed together (7. No Room! The Shuffle-up Song). Mary and Joseph arrive last and are shown to the stable, where Jesus is born (8. Ringle the Bell). Word gets round and everybody visits the stable (9. Look at the Baby). The angels visit the shepherds and announce the birth of Jesus, and the shepherds, amazed at this event, decide on a present and make their way to Bethlehem (10. Shepherds, Humble and Poor). The star appears in the sky and one of the kings sees it, overawed by the immensity of space (11. Star in the Sky). The three kings meet and when they ask where a new king has been born, they are shown the way to Jerusalem (13. I am Herod, I am Number One!). He asks the kings to tell him about the new king when they find him. The kings continue on their way and arrive in Bethlehem, where they offer their gifts (14. The Kings' Gifts). With the arrival of the kings, the celebrations are completed with the final song (15. Hallelujah! Christ is Born Today!).

Mixed Bag

This section includes a few more of the songs I have written over the years. ‘Summer Camp’ celebrates the positive aspects of adventure trips with youngsters, while ‘Ants in Yer Pants’ describes the ‘down’ side of living under canvas, and was written for a version of Robin Hood in the 70s. The ‘Night Creatures’ are nocturnal animals who scare people. ‘Read a Book’ was written for the UK education system’s annual ‘Book Week’, which is always fun, especially on the day the children dress up as their favourite character. ‘Peace and Joy’, and ‘Jesus, You’re my Friend’ are songs we used to sing in religious assemblies.
